Optimising the Promotional Mix in Duty Free
Promotions have always played a key role in the Duty Free environment, but with such a diverse mix of travellers, purchase missions and shopping behaviours, there’s no single promotional mechanic that will appeal to everyone. While some shoppers are primarily motivated by saving money, others are looking for added value, rewards or something that makes their purchase feel special.
Having an optimised promotional mix is therefore essential to meeting the needs of the wider shopper base, rather than relying too heavily on one type of offer. And this is particularly the case when considering that a lack of attractive promotions is always one of the leading footfall & conversion barriers to the store.
Looking at our latest shopper research from the Pi Insight Global Shopper Database, there are some clear differences in the promotional mechanics that Duty Free shoppers find most appealing:
Direct Price Discounts (49%)
This is a fairly obvious one and by far the most popular promotional mechanic, reinforcing just how important price and value remain in Duty Free. For shoppers who are actively comparing prices or looking for a good deal, a straightforward discount is often the simplest and most effective way to communicate value.
Free Product-Related Gifts (24%)
For some shoppers, added value can be just as appealing as a lower price. A complimentary product or gift can make the overall proposition feel more attractive, particularly when it complements the original purchase.
Multi-Buy Offers (24%)
Particularly relevant for shoppers looking to stock up, purchase for others or buy products for sharing. Multi-buy promotions can encourage larger purchases, although the offer still needs to represent genuine value and suit the shopper’s needs.
Gift Wrapping (18%)
Promotional mechanics do not need to be exclusively around additional items or money off, they can also be based around making the main purchase more special or event, just simply more suitable for the purchase occasion. With gifting playing an important role in Travel Retail, complimentary gift wrapping can be an effective value add-on.
Loyalty Card Points (16%)
While less widely preferred than immediate discounts, loyalty rewards still appeal to a meaningful proportion of shoppers. For frequent travellers in particular, the opportunity to earn points or access future benefits can provide an additional reason to choose one location over another.
Ultimately, optimising promotions isn’t simply about offering the biggest discount. It’s about offering the right type of value to the right shopper, creating a promotional mix that can appeal to different needs while supporting both conversion and basket growth.
